Reasons To Protect Your Skin From The Summer Sun

This is a classic scene in self-care: An umbrella on a sandy beach, next to a sunbather sitting on a chair. This picture is a mess. Although it is tempting to relax, the reality is that sun exposure can cause skin cancer.

A Sunburn Story

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation website, the browning of your skin may seem innocuous or even fashionable. However, it is a sign you are causing damage to your largest organ. Unprotected skin can become susceptible to UV rays, which can lead to cell mutation. Inflammation of the skin due to sun rays can cause skin damage. The visible result is darkening in melanin which is the pigment in your skin, hair, and eyes.

It doesn't matter if you get tanned or burned, it is a sign that your skin has suffered cellular damage. People with a lower level of melanin in their genes are more likely to sunburn. Sometimes, it can cause swelling, reddening, and pain. Sometimes, blisters can form on the skin.

Old sunburns may start to peel. This is your body's natural response to injury: trying to remove damaged cells. Let the skin peel naturally, instead of manually removing any bits.

Sometimes, UV rays can also cause skin cancer by altering a gene that prevents tumor formation.

Even if your skin isn't showing any signs of sunburn or tanning, the sun can cause damage to the epidermis or top layer of the skin. Your skin is damaged by ultraviolet radiation and not heat from the sun. This is why you can be burned in all weather conditions. Although you may believe the clouds provide protection, the truth is that they can transmit up to 80 percent the sun's rays through the clouds.

Different Levels Of Skin Damage

A biopsy is performed if the UV rays cause skin cells to become cancerous. The website for the American Cancer Society describes the stages of skin cancer are signs that skin damage can lead to skin cancer.

Basal cell carcinomas, which are early-stage cancers, are often treated successfully. Although they are rare, squamous cells carcinomas are a common form of cancer that can recur after surgery.

Your physician will diagnose the stage of cancer if a suspicious spot is found on the skin. The American Joint Commission on Cancer established a system for identifying cancerous tissue. It relies on three characteristics, each of which has a letter.

  • T is for tumor: The tumor's size and whether it has grown into bone or tissue.

  • N is for nodes: This indicates that the possibility of cancer spreading to nearby lymph nodes

  • M stands for metastasis. This refers to whether cancer has spread to other areas of the body.

These three factors are combined to determine the severity level of a case. The earliest stage is 0, while others range from the Roman numeral 1 to 4. A higher number indicates that the cancer has spread and is more serious. The following factors can also affect the prognosis:

  • The speed of the tumor's growth

  • The borders of the tumor

  • The location of the tumor

  • Invasion of blood vessels and small nerves

  • Immune system health

Different Types Of Treatment

There are simple ways to get rid of sunburn if you have spent too much time out in the sun.

Hydrotherapy - You can keep your skin moisturized and apply towel compressions throughout your day to cool down the burn. You should keep the temperature at lukewarm to cool as hot water can cause skin irritations and strip your skin of its natural oils.

Topical Gel- Aloe Vera is safe and reliable. It has anti-inflammatory properties, and moisturizers to reduce the appearance of peeling. It has been proven to reduce pain and speed up healing.

Baking soda - Although it isn't a proven home remedy, many recommend taking a bath with a couple of tablespoons of baking soda to reduce inflammation and itching. It can also be used to treat sunburns by being made into a paste.

Topically applied essential oils- These natural products can help to improve skin health and reduce sunburn symptoms. The following essential oils have benefits:

  • Bergamot

  • Sandalwood

  • Cilantro

  • Spikenard

  • Lavender

  • Chamomile

Although spending the day on a beach chair may sound luxurious, too much sun and neglecting to apply sunblock can have unwelcome results. Although a nice tan can look great, it may not be as appealing as you think. It could become a problem if the skin becomes leathery, sagging, unattractive scars, or worse, a battle against cancer.
